Perfect Basmati rice every time!

This method of cooking Basmati rice, uses a 1:2 ratio of rice to water in volume, meaning that the rice absorbs all the water so it does not need draining and won't stick to the pan. It makes beautifully cooked rice and serves 2-4 people, but can eaily be doubled up.

INGREEDIENTS

  • 1 cup Basmati Rice

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 cups Water

1 cup is about 200g rice and 450ml water

FOUR GOLDEN RULES

  1. Get the ratio right - volume rice to water = 1:2

  2. Wash the rice really well

  3. Use a pan with a heavy bottom and tight fitting lid

  4. Leave it alone – Let the rice do the work, it knows what it is doing!

METHOD

  • Wash the rice in a sieve under the cold tap. You need to wait until the water runs clear. This means that all the starch has been washed off the rice

  • Add the water, rice and salt to the pan and bring to the boil

  • As soon as it comes to the boil, give it a quick stir, turn down the heat to the lowest setting and put on the lid

  • Leave to gently cook for 10 minutes

  • After 10 minutes, turn the heat off and let the pan sit with the lid on and the heat off for 5 minutes

  • Take the lid off and fluff up with a fork before serving

(if you're feeling fancy, you could add a knob of butter)
